The perfect finale for one of the greatest rock bands of all time
Iconic American rock band KISS performed their final show at Newcastle's Utilita Arena on Tuesday, June 6, and this reviewer was lucky enough to attend their explosive farewell.
As the curtain was brought down onto the stage to mask the band getting into position, the fans anxiously awaited their first glimpse of the iconic makeup and outrageous high heels.
The show got off to a fantastic start, as the band, made up of vocalist Paul Stanley, bass player Gene Simmons, guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer, were lowered onto the stage while suspended on platforms, and performing their massive hit Detroit Rock City.
This was followed up by some of their classic hits from their first and second albums released in 1974, such as Deuce, Hotter than Hell and Black Diamond.
With the two original members of the band, Stanley and Simmons, now in their early 70s, it is no surprise that they had to go off stage for a quick break every so often. What KISS do very well is keep audiences entertained during these breaks, with solos from Thayer on guitar or Singer on the drums.
At times, these solo segments were some of the most entertaining parts of the show, with Eric Singer rising into the sky on his platform when playing the drums, Tommy Thayer's guitar shooting fireworks out of its neck, imitating a rocket launcher, and bassist Gene Simmons breathing fire and spitting blood like only he knows how.
Speaking of Gene Simmons, another highlight was his rendition of God of Thunder, which saw him raised above the stage and sing in a demonic voice that fits his persona perfectly. A special mention also has to be given to frontman Paul Stanley, who can still dance around and perform as enthusiastically as ever at the age of 71.
Stanley was not just content to dance on stage however, as he took a ride on a zipline to a platform in the middle of the arena, to be directly in the centre of the crowd as he performed late 70's hits I Was Made for Lovin' You and Love Gun.
After going off stage and coming back for an encore in typical KISS fashion, drummer Eric Singer sang a poignant and emotional rendition of their famous rock ballad, Beth, after he rose from the stage on a piano.
After closing the show with Rock and Roll All Nite, KISS came to the front of the stage, bowed down to the audience, and said their final goodbye to a city where they had rocked out many times, including at the City Hall in 1983 and 1984.

The stadium was heaving, with thousands of people crammed together like a tin of sardines. People queued outside the stadium for hours, some even camped as they waited for the experience of a lifetime.
Flamboyant pink hats and feather boas blushed the stadium in colour as fans wore bright colourful clothes synonymous with Harry’s style. The crowd roared when Harry made his first appearance on centre stage and opened with a cheesy smile and a dinky boogie.
After performing some much-loved classics, such as Adore You and Watermelon Sugar, the stadium was thriving with deliriously-happy fans. Thousands of ‘Harry enthusiasts’ were merrily bouncing about in the bright pink hats they’d bought outside the stadium.
For those One Direction lovers, Harry performed What Makes You Beautiful, capturing the hearts of many in the crowd as the lyrics vibrated through the stadium like a continuous Mexican wave.
This modern day Elvis Presley took the show on by a storm as he engaged throughout the performance with members of the audience, he even did a gender reveal and sang happy birthday to 75-year-old Fleetwood Mac legend Stevie Nicks.
The triple Grammy-winning artist teamed together tightly coordinated routines with incredible theatrical musicians, in addition to interactive virtual scenes plastered in bright colours.
From flashing lights, lasers, steam machines, and video projections, to all manner of eye-popping crowd engagement; the show was nothing short of a masterpiece.
Amongst all the organised chaos, the star was able to entice the crowd with a few emotional songs, including Sign of The Times that pulled at a few heartstrings. During the series' of melancholy tunes, thousands of people waved a torch in unison as Harry spoke about the songs he most resonated with.
Near the end of the show, the pop-star showed immense gratitude for the members of his band, the crew working behind the scenes and everyone who travelled to come and see him perform live.
The show stopping finale was the artist’s best known and loved song, As It Was. Throughout the entirety of the lyrical masterpiece, Harry danced, sung along, waved a Scotland flag and threw out flowers to the audience.
For most of those in attendance, this was a dream worthy experience – and in the end, everyone left Murrayfield Stadium with perky smiles on their faces having ticked a colossal one off the bucket list.

Post Malone at Manchester AO Arena
Post Malone is one of the strangest success stories, bursting on the scene with a fusion of wavey stoner rap infused with incredibly catchy pop hooks. Following his 4th studio album '12 Carat Toothache' a UK tour was soon to follow, stopping at Manchester Arena for 2 nights.
Opening the show was Rae Sremmurd, an established duo consisting of Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee. It was great to have an already successful act support as the crowd knew hit after hit, from their opener 'No Type' through to the banger 'Powerglide'. The chemistry between the duo on full display and good crowd interaction.
It wasn't long after the lights dimmed for the main man Post Malone, rising from the stage as lights sparkled - opening with 'Reputation', a heavy track before bursting with energy into 'Wow'. Posty had the audience in the palm of his hand and the hits didn't stop here. With 4 albums already under his belt, Post has plenty of songs to choose from, dancing his way through 'I Like You' and 'Wrapped Around Your Finger' off his most recent project; before the crowd sung every word to sleeper hit 'Better Now' or 'Candy Paint' from his 2018 offering 'Beerbongs & Bentleys'.
About halfway through the set came the acoustic portion, Post sat at the end of the main runway stage to play 'Feeling Whitney' and 'Lemon Tree'. The former making this writer slightly emotional and the latter being a welcome surprise - albeit at the expense of 'Stay' being cut from the setlist.
The next portion of the setlist focused more on his third project 'Hollywood's Bleeding' with the crowd favorites 'Circles' and 'Take What You Want' - an impressive firework and pyro display closing as Posty embraced his screaming vocals.
Closing the main set was a run of his biggest hits: 'Rockstar', 'Goodbyes' and the Swae Lee assisted 'Sunflower' from the Spider-verse soundtrack (Swae Lee joined Post Malone on stage and handed sunflowers to the crowd).
The encore kicked off with recent single 'Chemical' - having also recently been announced as the lead single for upcoming album 'Austin'. It's a track I've enjoyed as a single and Post performs it with an infectious charisma. 'Congratulations' followed, again closing with an indoor pyro display and Post took in and appreciated the 14,000 in attendance before bursting into breakout single 'White Iverson' to close the show - heading down to the barrier to meet some of his most die hard supporters.
Post Malone performs with so much energy and passion it's hard not to enjoy yourself. Whether dancing along to some of his happier songs or belting some of his sadder songs there's something for everyone and I hope we get another tour after his new album.

Loyle Carner: An unforgettable night at Newcastle City Hall
Loyle Carner has been making waves in the music industry since his debut album, 'Yesterday's Gone', and his latest live performance at the Newcastle City Hall was no exception. This unforgettable night was a unique and intimate experience that showcased the very best of Loyle's talents.
Loyle's music, combined with the stunning acoustics of the hall, made for an extraordinary evening that left the audience mesmerised. It was great hearing some of the stories behind the songs, it made the lyrics mean a little more. Carner also mentioned he had been to the local independent cinema, "Tyneside Cinema" which was received with a roar of cheers.
In particular, "Ottolenghi" was a crowd-pleaser and worked very well as Loyle's encore song. It was a night that will remain in the minds of all who attended, long after the encore was over.

I need an 'Inhaler' after breathtaking performance.
Inhaler put a show on for the ages at the Nx Newcastle on Friday night.
I was very shocked when I arrived at the venue and noticed the variety in ages that had bought tickets to see the Irish band, it shows you that their messages really do appeal to everyone.
As soon as the first chord of 'These Are The Nights' rang out, the crowd were clearing the space for the mosh pits to begin.
Inhaler's second album 'Cuts & Bruises' was released on the same day as this sold-out gig and you could feel how excited and ecstatic the band were to sing to the crowd. If there is a city to host an album launch party then it is Newcastle.
The band have a very busy year ahead with many festivals booked. They will also be supporting huge artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Harry Styles and even local hero, Sam Fender at the Toon's most anticipated gig at St James' Park.
Hearing 'Cheer Up Baby' and 'My Honest Face' live have been on my wishlist for a while and they did not disappoint. Band frontman Elijah Hewson blew me away with one of the only artists I have seen that has a better voice than the one on the record.
Inhaler are continuing to hit the road with their tour UK and will be visiting a city near you. If they aren't sold out then buy your ticket and if they are sold out then I advise you sell your right leg to get into the gig.

IT’S AN EASY YES FOR EASY LIFE!
The sold-out show at Newcastle’s O2 City Hall proved just how popular the band have become with no specific age or gender vibing to the bands latest and best hits. I have reviewed a lot of gigs over the past few years but I have never felt such a buzz with the audience. The band came out to an almighty roar and kicked the gig off with a beautiful performance of ‘Growing Pains’ which definitely got the crowd going.
They treated us to new live performances, as well as the crowd favourites such as ‘skeltons’, ‘sunday’ and ‘OTT’. It was fantastic having the band members crowd surf, something that artists don’t do enough of anymore. This felt like an old school band who were loving every second of being on that stage. You could almost feel your hair standing up with so much electricity coming off the stage. I had previously heard of the band jumping from the balcony at other gigs so if you are expecting big crowd interacting stunts then you will not be disappointed. The band dedicated the song ‘Ocean View’ to ‘one of our biggest fans which we lost last year’. I just so happened to be stood beside the friends and family of the late fan. It was truly a beautiful moment and I couldn’t help but shed a little a tear. Great bands listen to their fans, even better bands acknowledge them.
‘nightmares’ was the first song to get me addicted to ‘Easy Life’ and I have been itching to see them perform it live for a while and it was brilliant. The ticket price was worth it alone for seeing that song and the fact you get to hear another 15 songs makes it an absolute steal. The crowd demanded the band come and play ‘one more song’, well they actually treated us to ‘Fortune Cookie’ and ‘Dear Miss Holloway’ from their new album ‘Maybe In Another Life’. Both tracks were electric, and a sea of iPhones were quickly pulled out to capture the bands new tracks. If there is one thing you do today, make sure you buy your ‘Easy Life’ tickets. The band will be continuing their tour and visiting pretty much every UK city.

The 1975 at Gorilla - Nostalgic set is the perfect tour finale the band needed
Gorilla in Manchester hosted an intimate gig for The 1975 to raise money for War Child UK.
As Matty, Adam, Ross and George emerged from the wings, the room broke out into screams - not cheering - actual shrieking. Launching into The 1975 album opener The City, the singer gave the crowd a knowing smile as they shouted back every lyric he’d written.
M.O.N.E.Y and Chocolate followed and that was all the confirmation needed - the 1975 were playing the whole of their self-titled album from start to finish.
“Hardcore fans will probably know what we’re up to,” Matty notes a few songs in, knowing full well that at least 99 per cent of the lucky 500 were just that. In his signature philosophical style he tells the crowd “nostalgia is a sickness” adding: “We wouldn’t be doing this if we weren’t only getting good now, we’re just starting to make our best work”. He then concedes that he doesn’t mind doing something a bit nostalgic tonight because “It’s just for us, isn’t it?”
After touring such a technically challenging and high-intensity live show for weeks, tonight’s performance feels like a form of liberation for the band. In fact, it’s almost jarring to see them packed on such a small stage after seeing them weaving between the different rooms of At Their Very Best's slick studio flat.
This was a chance for the 1975 to rewind time, leave the performance art element behind and ‘wing it’ like they used to, as Matty says. But this time in front of loyal fans who have spent over a decade by their side. One fan calls out that they have travelled all the way from Boston for the show, while Matty admits that he recognises some faces in the crowd.

The 1975's homecoming gig at Newcastle Utilita Arena
The 1975 were back on home-turf as they brought their TikTok viral tour to Newcastle.
We were invited inside Matty’s house and introduced to his band members one by one as they made their way onto the stage.
With Matty back on home turf, the arena was always bound to be packed out, and we were keeping our eyes peeled for his dad Tim and mum Denise Welch who’ve appeared at previous gigs on his tour, often stealing the limelight. The easily over two hour set was packed full of Geordie touches, new and old songs and not-so-great dad jokes, but Matty was the showman we know and love throughout.
Living up to the recent headlines, he dug into a slab of raw meat – with a bottle of Newcy Brown to wash it down, of course, followed by push-ups. You had to be there to understand. (We’re lying: we were there and we still don’t understand?).
After a dramatic black-out following a monologue from Matty about method acting, Tim Healy miraculously appeared on stage with a rendition of the band’s song All I Need to Hear – and he wasn’t half bad!
We were placing our guesses on who the special guest may be (with Taylor Swift having graced crowds in London earlier in their tour). Sam Fender was at the top of our list, but we got Harry Styles! Oh, sorry… we were told it was Harry Styles but the person who actually arrived on stage was Lewis Capaldi, and he sang a Taylor Swift classic. We certainly didn’t see that coming!
The legendary John Waugh, the band’s sax player, received well-deserved applause for his solo and Matty, on numerous occasions, shared what he loved about being Northern – something the crowd loved. But the last 15 minutes of this show were our highlight. Things got a little less weird as they performed the classics (The Sound, Sex and Chocolate) for the cheering crowd.
As true Northerners, we’ve seen The 1975 a few times, but we can happily say this was by far their best, longest and most artistically creative show yet.

Lewis Capaldi Stunning Performance at Newcastle Utilita Arena.
The last time Lewis Capaldi played a headline show around these parts, it was over the road in Think Tank, a 200 capacity club with a low ceiling and newspaper clippings of punk icons pasted to the walls.
From the confetti blast midway through opener Forget Me, through the dry-ice drenched Lost On You, to the ubiquitous singalong of Someone You Loved, this was a Big Pop Show (tm) in every sense. The sheer force of presence that the lad from Glasgow possesses fills these stages apparently effortlessly, and it’s easy to forget his struggles with anxiety and with Tourettes, which make this feat even more impressive.
There’s a perverse logic to dragging yourself around the country to promote an album that isn’t out for months - get the fans back onside, build the interest again, and at the same time, don’t feel the need to bombard them with half an album’s worth of new material, so tonight’s show was firmly about the hits… and the laughs, of course.
I’ve seen Lewis Capaldi’s shows described as “part pop concert, part Netflix comedy special”, and that’s bang on the money. There’s no denying he’s a funny guy. Certainly, some kids in the audience probably learned some new words tonight, but by now I think parents are probably aware of what they’re walking into. And he really does know how to land a punchline!
By the time he gets back from taking this tour around the world, there’s no doubt the new material will be firmly lodged in the collective fan-consciousness. Five huge outdoor shows in August, stretching from Manchester to Belfast, and taking in Reading, Leeds and Edinburgh in the middle, should see Capaldi make yet another huge step up in an already meteoric rise to pop greatness.

Blossoms at Newcastle City Hall
The crowd went wild as Tom Ogden and his band of 8 members graced the stage of O2 City Hall Newcastle. They were full of energy and joy from the moment they started their set with ‘At Most a Kiss’. I loved the lighting – very effective but simple. They didn’t need a load of distraction on stage because their performance was eccentric and impactful enough.
I adored their instant interaction with the audience before heading into the second song. This is something, if you have read my reviews before, I regard it very highly. Performers should be making audiences feel special and like they are connected with the band. Disconnected gigs lead to very poor performances in my experience. From the second song, Tom was constantly interacting with his audience both during songs and throughout. So you can only imagine my opinion on last night’s offering. Honey Sweet was the next song and even had all of the oldies at the back moving and grooving – me being one of them!
I adored the craft on stage during the third song – ‘Oh No (I Think I’m in Love)’ – Tom shouted ‘STOP!’ and the whole band froze on stage whilst he had another audience interaction. Very clever and very funny. I was impressed with how long Joe Donovan held that drumstick in the air for – it can’t have been comfortable.
Honestly, I will say this now – Tom Ogden may be the greatest front man/ woman I have ever seen. He had it all really. An incredible voice which felt like I was just at home listening to their vinyl, effortless movement around the stage which at times gave a very ethereal feel and interesting and engaging banter and stories with the audience. I enjoyed the set so much.
Half way through the set they played my favourite song from the new album – ‘Ode to NYC’. I loved the story time before this song about Netflix contacting them to write a song for a new movie they were releasing. Tom wrote this song and they never used it! Their loss as this honestly has the most beautiful melody and lyrics.
An amazing mixture of songs from all four albums followed this and they really had the crowd in the palm of their hands. It truly was seamless so their mission had been successful. The atmosphere was electric and almost everyone around the venue was singing their hearts out. The set ended with a stunning acoustic version of My Favourite Room which Tom ended with You’re Gorgeous by Babybird, Half the World Away by Oasis and left us singing Last Christmas- it is November after all. A great understanding of their fans and the music they would clearly love and sing along to.
They came on stage for their encore with their two biggest hits to date – There’s a Reason Why and Charlemagne. This left the crowd truly buzzing. Before leaving the stage Tom gave attention to his wonderful band and the crowd showed their appreciation.

'I predict a' sell out tour for the Kaiser Chiefs
The Kaiser Chiefs took to the stage at the Glasgow OVO Hydro for a night of infectious indie-rock anthems. From the very start, the band showcased their energy and passion, opening the show with the alternative intro of "Born to Be a Dancer."
The setlist was a blend of old favorites and newer tracks, with the band pulling out all the stops to keep the audience engaged. "Never Miss a Beat" and "Heat Dies Down" got the crowd jumping and singing along, and the energy only continued to build from there.
One highlight of the night was when the band slowed things down with an acoustic version of "Coming Home." Lead singer Ricky Wilson's voice was raw and emotional, capturing the audience's attention and creating a poignant moment in the show.
Throughout the night, the band's musicianship was on full display, with standout performances from all members. The guitar riffs and drum beats were tight and powerful, complementing Wilson's dynamic stage presence.
The crowd went wild when the band played fan favorites like "Everyday I Love You Less and Less" and "I Predict a Riot." But it was "Ruby" that really got the party started, with the audience belting out every word and jumping along to the infectious beat.
For the encore, Kaiser Chiefs brought the house down with "People Know How to Love One Another" and "Oh My God." It was a fitting end to a night of non-stop energy and passion, leaving the audience craving more.
